A Holistic Veterinarian keeps your pets healthy and happy NATURALLY.
I didn’t start out as a holistic veterinarian. I was just your regular, every day, throw every prescription drug at a sick animal and hope they’ll get better vet- because that’s what I got taught. When I went through vet school, the focus was to diagnose symptoms, categorise them into diseases, and then intervene with prescription medications and surgery.
My first step into becoming a holistic veterinarian was when I realised that dogs and cats experience neck and back pain. Big thanks to Dr Tom Ahern who opened my eyes!. Then I learned that I could use therapeutic touch, physical therapies, and saw pets improve out of sight (no medications needed!).
It took a serious illness – chronic fatigue syndrome, which stopped me from working at all for three years, and then handicapped me heavily for another 12 years, to really push me into becoming a wholly holistic veterinarian. I changed my diet, I explored herbs and supplements, I had practitioners help my pain and tension with bodywork and massage, and I discovered that energy healing gave me more relief than anything else I tried!
Being a curious fella, I then tried all of these things with the animals whom I cared for, and very quickly found that working as a holistic veterinarian helped me HEAL animals, rather than simply killing symptoms and putting fires out (all while causing more harm and making the disease worse and deeper embedded in the being!). Look out for a case study further on down.
Here’s my philosophy (and practice) as a holistic veterinarian.
I know that each animal is unique, and that their illness is unique. I explore your pet’s life story with you in depth, so I can understand the causes and inciting incidents that have triggered and added to the disease. Your pet’s STORY is incredibly important.
Then I explore the disease – the symptoms, when they developed, what has helped, what has made them worse.
The environment your pets live in is also very important, including you, the human end of the leash. You need to be caring for yourself as well as you care for your dogs, and sometimes you’ll have unconscious or energetic stuff going on that is affecting your pets, and part of the problem.
My final ingredient is a comprehensive, intuitive assessment, tuning into and perceiving what’s going on in your pet’s energy systems, chakras, and the energetic relationships with you, their family, other animals, and the earth spot where you live. This is one of the most powerful ways I help pets, and can unlock seemingly untreatable diseases that ‘nothing else has worked for’.
Only then do we dig into creating a holistic treatment plan. A plan is useless without understanding your pet’s needs, so they can heal.
My work as a holistic veterinarian – the three pillars!
The first pillar is diet, and getting your pet’s gut healthy. We will move away from all processed foods and treats (especially kibble!), and get into a healthy, fresh, whole foods diet- maybe raw, maybe cooked, depending on your pet’s age and how strong their ‘digestive fire’ is.
Depending on your pet’s needs, we may adjust the kinds of foods according to their energetics, if your pet needs a more specific ‘diet prescription’. We will also look at body weight – many pets need to lose weight.
The second pillar is holistic veterinarian treatments, supplements, and interventions. This might include bodywork, massage, energy healing, neutraceuticals, herbals, probiotics, edible clay, supplements, PEA, NAC, low-dose Naltrexone, cannabis extracts, faecal transplants, acupressure, and sometimes, referral to other practitioners for different modalities that are needed. We work up a treatment plan here, and then stick to it and review at regular intervals to assess the response.
The third pillar is intuitive connection, perception, and energy healing. This is the ‘secret sauce’ as far as I have found in my work. Here we can find the underlying causes, entanglements, and influences, and use energy healing to rebalance your pet’s being at a MUCH deeper level. I’ll often work with the humans at the same time, because all illness is an expression not only of imbalances and blockages in the body experiencing the illness, but also of the system of consciousness that they are living in. Unlocking things at this level can make all the difference.
This is how I work as a holistic veterinarian.
Here is a case study of my work as a holistic veterinarian – Milo has healed from someof the worst chronic allergies and gut issues I’ve seen…
This is Milo. When he first came to me a few years ago, he was red hot, itching continually like a madman, had gut issues, was stressed, anxious, and needed to go to the vet hospital to have fires (ear infections, skin infections, horrendous itching so he was scratching and chewing holes in himself) at least weekly, sometimes twice weekly. He was a HOT MESS.
We got him onto a holistic treatment plan, as above, and over a year or so, he had improved OUT OF SIGHT. Some mild itches, but nothing serious. Then another vet pressured his human into giving Milo an (unnecessary!) vaccination. He relapsed.
We refocused, rebuilt his holistic treatment plan, and when he came to see me last week, he was the happiest and healthiest I have ever seen him. Hasn’t needed to go to a vet to have fires put out for a year. Very slight occasional itches (not needing to be treated). He has put weight on, and he was the most relaxed he has EVER been.
One important point. His human had a life change, moved into a healthier relationship, and got a whole lot happier. At this time, she saw the final blossoming of Milo’s healing! (I share this to emphasise how important the human end of the lead is!)
I love my work as a holistic veterinarian. It’s deeply nourishing to see the animals I care for heal and grow into themselves!
